Geohgraphical Differences in Cancer Occurrence Rate and Fatality Rate

As mentioned in the report of WHO, the carcinogenic substances are largely related to occurrence of cancer. This is evidenced by reference to the substantive variations in the occurrence rates and death rates of cancer in their different geographical distributions. (Please refer to Table 15 on "Geographical variations in cancer occurrence frequency"

Survey of WHO (World Health Organization) in 1985

For example, the results of a survey of 1992 conducted in Japan on the comparative death rate of cancer are as following:

Provinces with higher death rate of carcinoma of stomach:

Male-Yamagata, Toyama, Akita

Female-Toyama, Niigata

Provinces with lower death rate of carcinoma of stomach:

Male-Okinawa, Kagoshima
Female-Okinawa, Kagoshima

Provinces with higher death rate of cancer of lung:

Male-Osaka, Nara, Fukuoka, Nagasaki
Female-Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, Fukuooka

Provinces with higher death rate of liver cancer:

Male-Saga, Nagasaki, Fukuoka, Osaka

Female-Saga, Miyazaki

Moreover, notwithstanding the variations in the occurrence rate of cancer due to different races in the world, the significant variations in such a small country as Japan can demonstrate the relationship between the occurrence of cancers and the differences in ecological systems, living environment, meal culture in a district (country). Also the carcinogenic substances in the food have even larger
relationship.
